Stakeholder Recommendations for Enhancing Access to Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs through Health Information Technology
Prescription drug misuse and overdose is one of the fastest growing health epidemics in the United States. The goal of the Enhancing Access to Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs Project is to use health information technology to increase timely access to prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) data in an effort to reduce prescription drug misuse and overdose. Work groups were convened comprising individuals from the healthcare community, industry, trade and advocacy groups, and state and federal government. The work groups discussed the primary problems facing the transport and use of PDMP data today (e.g., low usage, limitations on authorized users, current processes do not support clinical workflows, low technical maturity to support interoperability, and lack of business agreements), and developed specific recommendations to increase the usefulness and availability of PDMP data.
The final report of these recommendations is now available. These recommendations aim to facilitate information sharing to help health care professionals make better informed clinical prescribing decisions.
